As a result, I have decided that it's necessary for all new members accounts to be activated, after I've checked them out - nothing too serious - I will send an email to the email address they specify, and if I do not get a reply within 48 hours, I will delete the account. The email address can't be seen by other members, so hopefully this might reduce the problem.
